Teeth Cleanings | Forest Lane Dental Clinic | Family & General Dentists | SE Calgary

Did you know that healthy teeth and gums are the cornerstone of a healthy mouth and a beautiful smile? That is why Forest Lane Dental is pleased to offer dental hygiene and teeth cleaning appointments to help you achieve the optimal oral health you desire. While regular home care is very important, it only focuses on areas of the teeth above the gum line (called “scaling”). A professional dental cleaning cleans your teeth not only above the gum line, but also the area below the gum (called “root planing”) that cannot be reached with home care. It is only through regular root planing and scaling combined that tartar, plaque and bacteria can be fully removed from hard-to-reach areas below the gumline. Regular professional hygiene appointments and cleanings can help keep your teeth and gums healthy from top to bottom! Forest Lane Dental looks forward to helping you achieve optimal oral health and wellness with regular dental hygiene and teeth cleaning appointments.

Regular Hygiene and Teeth Cleanings Help Maintain Optimal Oral Health!

What Happens at a Dental Hygiene and Teeth Cleaning Appointment?

Calgary Dental Hygiene | Forest Lane Dental Clinic | Family & General Dentists | SE Calgary
  • A complete periodontal assessment
  • A complete check of your gum tissue. This includes checking for any gum recession, the presence of gingivitis and assessing possible gum disease
An intra-oral exam to check the gum tissue, tongue, and lips for confirmation of health
  • Scaling, which removes plaque, tartar (calculus,) and bacteria from your teeth so your gums and bone that make up the foundation of your teeth remain healthy and disease free
  • Polishing to remove stains from your teeth
  • Fluoride treatment (if chosen)
After your dental cleaning, you will be provided with the option to receive fluoride treatment. Fluoride is a natural mineral that helps strengthen the enamel (outer layer of your teeth) and helps prevent cavities

What Happens at a Dental Hygiene and Teeth Cleaning Appointment?

Calgary Dental Hygiene | Forest Lane Dental Clinic | Family & General Dentists | SE Calgary
  • Digital X-rays when required
Radiography helps us detect cavities in between teeth, assess bone levels and detect other possible problems within the oral cavity. Your dentist will decide what type of images you need and how often you need them based on your oral health examination.
Research shows that radiation received from digital X-ray machines is less than the radiation you receive from naturally occurring background sources throughout your day. Forest Lane Dental makes sure to follow the ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) policy.
  • Sealants (if chosen)
Sealants are protective coatings that are applied on the deep grooves of back teeth to prevent cavity formation in the future. Applying sealants is a fast, simple and painless procedure.
  • Oral cancer screening
We make every effort to screen your oral tissues (including your head, neck, and jaw area), examining along your gums, tongue, and other soft tissues of the mouth to check for confirmation of health and any signs of irregularities. The goal is to identify mouth cancer in the early stages, when there is a better chance for treatment and a cure.

How Often Should You Visit Us for a Dental Exam & Teeth Cleaning?

Dental Hygiene & Teeth Cleanings | Forest Lane Dental Clinic | Family & General Dentists | SE Calgary

The Forest Lane Dental team understands that each patient will require a different hygiene and cleaning schedule tailored to their specific needs. Most people come in for a dental hygiene appointment every 6 months. However, some people may benefit from coming in every 3-4 months, while others may be able to visit every 9-12 months. Genetics, level of care at home, grinding habits and teeth positioning are all key factors in determining the best oral hygiene and cleaning schedule for each individual patient. For those experiencing gum disease, heavy staining, loose teeth or heavy calculus buildup, a higher frequency of cleanings will help keep teeth healthier. At Forest Lane Dental, our goal is to identify any potential issues early on and stop them before they escalate into a much more serious concern.
